Hydroseeding by Wellington Lawn Specialists - the easy, cost effective way to grow a great lawn

Hydroseeding is a super smart way to establish a new lawn — and it’s what we do well at Wellington Lawn Specialists. We spray a mix of grass seed, protective mulch, and fertiliser onto prepared ground through a hydroseeding unit. This helps the seed stay in place, germinate faster, and grow into a lush, healthy lawn.

It’s faster and more effective than traditional seeding and more affordable over large areas than using ready-lawn. Whether it’s a residential backyard, a commercial development, or a civil project, hydroseeding gives you an even, reliable grass cover.

HYDROSEEDING

The process of hydroseeding

  • Site Preparation:
We get the surface ready first. That can mean killing off old grass, scraping back the site, or using a turf cutter. We’ll then level and finish with a fresh lawn mix if needed to create the best base for your new lawn.
  • Spraying the Seed Mix:
Once the prep’s done, we spray on a mix of seed, mulch, and fertiliser using a hydroseeder. The mulch holds everything in place and keeps moisture in, giving the seeds a great start. We have specialised equipment that can access small spaces or challenging slopes, enabling us to deliver exceptional results.

Grass types for all purposes

Every lawn is different. We’ll help you pick the right grass mix for your site based on:
  • Sun, shade, or coastal conditions
  • Heavy foot traffic (kids, pets) or more ornamental lawns
  • Erosion control needs
  • Best seasonal timing
Grasses we use:
  • Cool Season: Rye Grass, Fescue (Fine or Tall), or a custom blend
  • Warm Season: Kikuyu or Couch Grass
  • Specialty Blends: Berms, banks, and site-specific solutions
We’ll walk you through all the pros and cons during your site visit, so you get the right lawn for your space.

Hydroseeding for residential, commercial and civil projects

We’re your hydroseeding specialists for:
  • Residential: New builds, lawn renovations, full landscaping projects. (We even grassed over a filled-in pool recently!)
  • Commercial: New housing developments. We work with landscapers, builders, and developers
  • Civil and Council: Clean water runoff control, earthworks site stabilisation, erosion control, skate parks, berms, greenspaces
Big or small project? We’ve got the gear (and the know-how) to get it done.

Looking after your new hydroseeded lawn

We provide you with indepth instructions to look after your new lawn but the general guidelines are:
  • Watering: Keep the soil moist (but not soggy) for the first 2–3 weeks. Keeping the soil and hydroseed moist during the germination phase is extremely important.
  • Mowing: Mow once the grass is an average height of 70mm. Keep the blade sharp!
  • Fertilising: Feed your lawn at around the 4–5 week mark to boost growth.
  • Weed Watch: Pull out any weeds early before they spread.
A little care in the early weeks = a healthy lawn that lasts. You can always give us a call if you have any questions.
Hydroseeding is fast, affordable, and delivers awesome results. Whether it’s a backyard, a big development, or a civil project, we’ll help you get the grass growing. Contact Wellington and Kapiti's lawn installation specialists today.

Frequently asked questions about hydroseeding

It’s best to stay off the lawn as much as possible until after the first mow to avoid damaging the young shoots. At this stage, there can be light foot traffic but no more until the lawn is more established.

No, the green dye in the mulch is non-toxic and non-permanent. If it gets on paths or fences, it can be easily washed off with water. The mulch used is biodegradable and is safe for kids and pets. At Wellington Lawn Specialists, we pride ourselves in leaving a clean and tidy site.

While birds may pick at seeds on the surface, the majority of seeds are embedded in the soil and remain unaffected. Therefore, bird activity has minimal impact on overall germination.
